Alternative quartet, which convinces everyone that Czech jazz scene does not stagnate. The band Saxtime was established by Bedrich Šmarda in 2000, after he came back from Berklee College of Music. At the beginning, the band played as a trio in unusual frame of saxophone, drums and bass guitar. Since 2004 the band function as a quartet with pianist Stanislav Mácha. Sometimes, the band performs in alternative assembly with drummer Jiří Slavíček and bass player Jan Jakubec. All members of the band are top jazz musicians of Czech, and European jazz scene. They also play in various popular jazz bands or bands of different genres. Their approach to jazz and also their pedagogical activities influenced the evolvement of the Czech post communist jazz scene and they are huge inspiration to young musicians and beginners. Following the release of their debut album “Live in Jazz Club Železná”, the band toured the Czech Republic and also performed abroad.
Currently the band repertoire consists mostly of author pieces composed by Bedřich Šmarda, but during the live performances one can hear compositions of jazz personalities such as: Joe Lovano, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter etc. At the present time, the band is preparing repertoire for the new, second, but first recording studio album, as a quartet.
The exceptionality of this band lies particularly in excellent mastery of the instruments. Mutual musical understanding among the band members is the outcome of long term collaboration. Diffusion and cooperation of the instruments produce compact musical show, which can create several different colorful melodic units in each song. This band always guarantee the quality.
